Just ate at the Brown Bag Cafe today thanks to a $5 for $10 Groupon deal. After purchasing the deal I tried to find their menu on their website (http://www.brownbagcafenc.com/), but it seemed to have some sort of error and the menu wouldn’t display (not a great first impression). But I figured WTH, I’ll just stop by since it’s in between my home and work. They’re located in a newer office complex a little past Wanda’s (old Snack & Cue) on Patetown Rd (Hwy 111). I’ve never been a fan of this complex because it looks more like one large company than various stores. All of the stores (except for a couple) require you to walk inside the complex and enter the store from an inside entrance, kind of like a small mall. The problem is that there are not really any prominent signs outside to let you know what’s inside. Long story short…any business that is going to survive in this location needs to be on top of their advertising game, because there are still many people in the area that have no idea anything is even in that building. I’ve heard lots of people say “Isn’t that where the fence company is?”, not realizing that there are quite a few other businesses located there. On the better side, the building is very clean and well-maintained it seems, and does have a more elegant atmosphere that your run-of-the-mill diner.
I’ve noticed some reviews complaining about the service, but I must say that I have to disagree. The service I received today was excellent! I was first approached by a female employee who offered to take my order but I wasn’t quite ready yet. A few minutes later a male employee approached me again to take my order, and I told him what I wanted and that I wanted to redeem a Groupon voucher for the total. He made small talk while taking my order, and I mentioned that I couldn’t view the menu on their website. He stated that they are aware of it and it’s in the process of being fixed. I started on a cup of coffee while waiting for my food (I ordered it to-go), and hadn’t even taken but a few sips before it was ready. The same male employee rang up my order, redeemed my Groupon, and didn’t even make me pay the few cents I went over (I hate digging for change!). So on the service side, I think they’re awesome!
Now for the food…the coffee was good. I’m not a huge coffee drinker anyway. I ordered the P omelet with cheese grits, hashbrowns, and white toast. The cheese grits were FANTASTIC!!!!! I’ll dare to say they may have been the best I’ve ever had (without cooking them myself of course lol). But the hashbrowns were awful, and I ended up throwing them away after one bite. I feel like they would have been better if they were hotter, which may be more my fault since I had to wait from the restaurant to my work before I could eat them. Regardless, I won’t be ordering them again. The omelet was wonderful…egg whites, jalapenos, feta cheese, bacon, and mushrooms? Yes, please! But be warned…I asked for light jalapenos and it still lit my mouth on fire! I only ate a few bites of the omelet (I was so full from just the grits!), but it’s in the fridge and I’m sure won’t make it past the end of the day :)
Long story short…I will be going back, and would recommend this place to anyone. Oh, and did I mention…THEY DELIVER!!!!!! Yeah, that’s a big deal in Goldsboro…in fact, I don’t think there’s another restaurant in the whole city that delivers anything beside pizza and Chinese. Not sure about the delivery area, but I’ll be finding out soon and will update.
